From Boy to Man at Dried Foods SG

I laughed out when I saw that Facebook post. Indeed, that's the Thomas (or more fondly known as Xiu Long back in the old days) I knew - fun-seeking, average in my Biology and Chemistry class, but definitely not "good for nothing". To be honest, I felt he was more of a bashful boy - earnest in learning - than a fun-seeking one during the two years I taught him. Now I wonder if he had shared any witty comments about my lessons with his classmates.

So, when Thomas sent me a Facebook invite to like his FB page, I got very interested in his nutty business and found out more from him. It is not every day you get to hear a young man leave behind his cushy job at a renowned bank to help his family in their wholesale business at the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre.

Can you describe your typical day at work?

Thomas: 7 am is when we begin the arduous task of displaying our goods, the traditional way. Wooden crates, cartons are laid out to form the base, before baskets of dried food products are heaved atop. This process takes about an hour, and then we begin preparation for customers or phone orders to roll in.

From being a son helping out in the shop to running it with your parents now, what are some changes you notice about yourself?

Thomas: Well, this is interesting. From having zero interest in the business - which means dragging myself reluctantly to work when needed, now I wake up every day excited and raring to make a difference. Be it just being an additional pair of hands to my parents, learning more about the business (which was started by my grandfather since 1967), or finding ways to improve the business in line with today's modern world. I would say the biggest change is realising the painstaking efforts my parents and grandparents poured into this business to make it tick. It’s not easy, and a lot of sacrifices are required. Doing the same now, I feel myself “growing up” and being more conscious of my every actions.

What would you like people to know most about your products?

Thomas: We feed your dried food needs! Be it spices, beans, mushroom, dried seafood, condiments or any dried food products you may require for your cooking, we are here for you. Then we have our range of nuts, dried fruits and health food, which are a great addition to your daily diet for a healthier lifestyle. We are also constantly on the lookout for more dried food products to bring in according to what our customers want.

What are the bestsellers at your shop?

Thomas: I won't exactly describe us as having a specific bestseller, as customers’ demands are seasonal. For example, during Chinese New Year, snacks like our Iran pistachios, shrimp rolls and roasted cashew nuts fly off like hotcakes. Come Dumpling Festival, bamboo leaves, dried shrimps and dried chestnut - just to name a few - disappear quickly. In the summer, when the weather turns unbearably hot, Chinese barley, chrysanthemum flower, Luo Han fruit are snapped up. And then there's your housewives purchasing daily necessities like onions, potatoes and garlic. It all comes down to what customers want most, and we serve as a convenient outlet to meet their dried goods needs.

Can you tell us 3 things that differentiate your products from the many brands out there?

Thomas: Instead of looking at differentiating our products, we prefer to differentiate ourselves via shopping experience. The first would be the "human touch". Customers who purchase from us are treated like friends and family. Unlike in a supermarket where you grab what you need and go, we do more. Such as exchanging cooking advice or recommendations, trade personal stories or even just lending a listening ear to customers who need it. Which is why we have customers bringing their generations of family where we interact and simply "hang out" by the shopfront, whilst the wives gather what they need for the households.

Secondly, we abide strictly to the value instilled since my grandfather's times – honesty, integrity and commitment to our customers. In addition, my grandfather used to say "We want our customers to come back to find us, not come back to complain about us." That means insisting on bringing in only the best quality goods, and rejecting any that fails our standards, even if we are out of stock. This allows our customers to have faith and trust in our products, knowing they will never buy anything that will fail their taste bud, and that's how we achieve customer loyalty.

Last of all, our products are kept fresh and pristine via proper cold storage. Which translate to no spoilt, rancid or pungent goods. This might sound simple, but really, you will be surprised how we hear of many cases where customers bought home nuts from other places that have turned rancid. Or anchovies that give off a strong pungent smell despite being bought recently. Here, we offer safe assurance and satisfaction in giving our customers only the best they should deserve.

Thomas kindly sent me a few packs of their dried fruits and nuts snack mixes for sampling. Snack mixes like these always come in handy to fill a rumbling tummy in between meals. Or simply add a dollop of yoghurt to these dried fruits and nuts to make a healthy and appetising breakfast. The kids love these snack mixes as much as I do, especially the ones with dried fruits added. One reason why these dried fruits and nuts pre-mixes stand out from the usual brands I have bought is the freshness of the premium nuts in every bite. Although they might be a little pricier than what you get at local supermarts, these good quality nuts leave a little sweetness in the aftertaste. Thomas also patiently educated me about their dried apricots and explained why they look darker brown than the usual orange ones I have eaten. Dark brown apricots are dried naturally, hence no sulfite compounds have been added to preserve the fruits. People with asthma history are said to have a higher risk of developing sulfite allergy. So, if you do not belong to this category, sulfite compounds probably won't cause much harm to your body. But then again, why add more chemicals to your body when you can avoid them?

[Review] Play and learn at Busy Tables for kids 0 to 5 years old

Indoor playgrounds - a place where kids run amok in their wet and stinky clothes and parents chase their kids around breathlessly; a place where children and the children-at-heart get to exercise and have fun. Although we like indoor playgrounds, we seldom bring our kids there, simply because the big kids are too intimidating for K, who still walks with an unsteady and wide gait and loses her balance easily.

So when I was introduced to Busy Tables, I fell in love with the pastel-coloured painted walls. The calm in the air also made the centre extra-welcoming.

Jeff and Gladys, owners of Busy Tables, have put in a lot of work to dedicate this space to "promote educational values of play for young children and encourage positive parent and child interactions through the provisions of quality toys, games, and resources".

You might ask, what can my baby do at an indoor playground? He is still young! You'll be amazed. There is so much you can use to stimulate his senses; so much to learn and play at Busy Tables.

What we like about Busy Tables

1. It is a playground, a learning centre AND a toy store! And because this place is specially catered for children between 0 to 5 years old and their parents, it is safe for the babies and toddlers. Older children dashing about loudly is not a common sight.

2. I love the cosy environment that Busy Tables offers and was surprised to find a huge variety of resources and toys available! Just the shelves alone (picture below) has more than enough resources to keep your child occupied for the whole day, so a 2-hour play is definitely not enough! That's why it's worth getting a Busy Tables Annual Pass (weekday membership) for your little one.

If you are familiar with Montessori curriculum, you will spot many learning resources that are Montessori-inspired on the shelf units. Thinking, observation, and fine motor skills, as well as language, literacy and numeracy are emphasised while your child plays with them.

Resources on the 8x4 shelf units are labelled with a position tag and play instructions so that you know exactly how to guide your child to play. The 4 rows on the shelf units are labelled with a different coloured sticker so that the child/parent knows exactly which shelf to return the bag.

For example, a blue sticker numbered "8" means the bag is kept at the blue row at column 8.

The resources are of varying levels of difficulty. As you move from the left to the right of the shelf, the difficulty level of the resources also increases. So, if your child is still a baby, resources from columns 1 or 2 will be most suitable for him.

3. Busy Tables promotes playing with, and guiding our children, in purposeful play. If you have not known, play and speech development go hand-in-hand!

So, instead of dropping the kids off at the centre to play on their own and parents savour your coffee in peace, Busy Tables wants parents to stay with them and play together. Through play, there are lots of opportunities for parent-child communication. You can repeat and repeat the words you are helping your child to learn, in a meaningful context! Children are also kept busy in a fun way!

For example, when playing with this ramp toy, watch carefully to see what your child likes to do with the cars. You may need to show your child how he can position the car on the red platform and give it a little push. You can also race two cars together. Words that you can emphasise, while playing, can be "down (the ramp), fast, car".

For children who are starting to combine words in a sentence, you can ask "What will happen?" and wait for your child to respond. He might say "Car crash", and you continue the conversation by expanding what he says. **Just a caution, don't turn your conversation into a question-answer session which many parents unconsciously slip into, in our efforts to get our children to talk more.

4. There is a dark room! There is a dark room! This room is probably my favourite corner at Busy Tables. Weighing glass pebbles, transferring small items from one cup to another, and exploring colours always look more fun and mesmerising on a light table! Besides, some studies show that playing on a lighted surface increases attention span of children with special needs.

5. I notice that Busy Tables has something to offer for every child. I have organised two playdates at Busy Tables, each with about 13 kids, and there wasn't any bored child spotted. All the kids were actively engaged in activities after activities. I believe Busy Tables must have carefully curated the resources and considered the needs of every child when they designed the centre.

There are cloth books, board books, a small tent for a child who needs his comfort zone, building blocks for constructive play (they have the usual-sized ones for the little fingers and jumbo-sized ones too!) and toys for children below 1 year old. Even the chairs come in different shapes and sizes. Some are only for children. Baby floor seats and a playmat are available too.

6. There was always something different each time I went. It could be a new play corner, new resources and toys, or a change of theme in the sensory box. Sensory play is imperative for young children and I'm happy that a sensory play area has been included for our children at Busy Tables.

7. Pretend play is also a big part of Busy Tables, and there are many toys available to facilitate that. Materials from the sensory box can be your child's ingredients for cooking a delicious meal, and toys like these from MOLUK, an award-winning Swiss toy company, can be used as a hat or a bowl - anything your child can conjure up with his imagination. I was very excited when I saw MOLUK toys at Busy Tables because I wanted to buy one for L to play with a few years back. Now I know where to find them.

8. At Busy Tables, children learn to pack each toy/resources and keep them where they are found before taking another off the shelf. By doing so, this teaches them to do their share to keep the place safe and neat for all users. Parents can also help to reinforce this message when your child forgets. In this way, everyone learns to be disciplined and responsible at the centre.

9. After playing, if you like a resource/toy that your child has played, you can buy a new set from the store if they are available for sale. You save time from making the learning resources, and they are priced reasonably. If you like their sensory play, you can also purchase the sensory boxes My Messy Box from them.

All in all, I enjoyed my play at Busy Tables; my kids too, and we will definitely revisit. This is also a great place for playdates with young children. Although Busy Tables caters to children below 5 years old, older siblings will also enjoy their experience there. LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS Macy's Thunder Mace and Ultimate Axl review

In a recent survey, I was surprised to discover that we have such a broad range of LEGO products in my house - LEGO STAR WARS, LEGO NINJAGO, LEGO CITY, LEGO CHIMA, LEGO DUPLO, LEGO CLASSIC, LEGO CREATOR, LEGO SUPER HEROES. Even ZY still has his precious LEGO set which he carefully kept for more than thirty years.

After being blessed with 5 sets of LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS and visiting the roadshow during the June hols, L was even more excited about this series.

What do the kids like about the NEXO KNIGHTS sets?

What I think about the LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS

There is certainly a lot of "coolness" in this theme as the LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS sets can be played in both the physical and digital forms. The two sets reviewed are recommended for children ages 8 to 14 and L completed them fairly quickly by following the instruction manuals. The creative play then continues just as with all other great LEGO themes.

In its digital form, the shield from every set can be scanned on the MERLOK 2.0 app game which can be downloaded to your smartphone or tablet to give an immersive playing experience. Using the power scanner in the app, the power from each type of shield can be collected to build stronger and more powerful knights and to defeat Jestro and his monsters in the game.

However, I have not permitted them to download the game till now. Main reason is the addictive lure to have more shields in order to power up their knights in the app game. The kids know my stand for now, but they are still "trying their luck" to ask once a while. I agreed to read up more about the app game and L has also promised he won't go overboard with playing on the app.

I guess if you exercise strong parental control and restrict the number of minutes your child gets to play on the app, this app game definitely sounds like a very fun one not just for your child, but maybe one that bonds the parent and child too!

Like their weekend Breakfast Buffet, there is always something for everyone. The buffet spread includes roast meat platter, freshly cooked pasta, thin-crusted pizza, an assortment of finger food, herbal prawns, and a selection of desserts to name a few.

And for a limited time only, Sandbank is having a promotion for their All-You-Can-Eat International Lunch Buffet where 1 person dines free (inclusive of kids) with every 3 paying adults.

The pasta can be customised to suit your taste and it is freshly prepared upon request. You can choose between Aglio Olio, carbonara, bolognaise or penne and cheese. The creamy cauliflower soup is flavorful and not to be missed.

The salad section has a good variety of greens, green mango salad (yummy!), chicken mushroom with pesto and an assortment of salad dressing.

My friends and I love the pizza with artichokes toppings! The crust is thin with a crunchy perfection.

Their fried chicken wings are worth the extra calories. Grab them quickly else they will be gone too soon. The spring rolls and rings are just so-so though.

Other Asian dishes include Steamed Pork in Black Bean Sauce, Teriyaki Chicken, Nasi Lemak, and Tandoori Fish Fillet.

This is the other one of my favorites. Succulent prawns that are cooked just right in a delicious herbal broth. Even my friend, who is allergic to seafood, couldn't resist taking a sip of the broth and she gave a thumbs-up. Just look at all the herbs that go into the broth!

I usually try to control myself at buffets but with good food and company, it was difficult to stop. I took more than one helping for the clams in wine, and the herbal prawns... and the pizza... and the pasta... I think you get my point.

The dessert and fruits selection is small but of good quality. There wasn't anything I didn't like on my plate. The lunch buffet also comes with free flow hot tea and coffee, as well as apple juice and orange juice.

Of all my three visits to Sandbank, I observe that the staff is very attentive to their customers. Their service is prompt - plates are cleared off the table quickly, a utensil that a child accidentally drops is replaced even before the mommy notices it. Color pencils are available upon request, and they are very helpful with any special request you have for your coffee or tea.

So, if you would like a place to be near the sea but still enjoy the comfort of an air-conditioned dining area on a weekday afternoon, Sandbank is a good choice!

[Review & Giveaway] Creating with Nature at Playeum's Hideaways

I have heard so many good things about Playeum especially after the opening of the Children's Centre for Creativity at the Gillman Barracks and its inaugural exhibition 'The Art of Speed'. So when I got to know that Playeum has opened a new exhibition where visual art, music, nature and (lots of) playtime come together, I was excited to visit!

And this is why. Led by Creative Director Jeremy Chu, and conceived of by artists and other content creators, 'Hideaways - Creating with Nature' features installations which encourage children to explore, observe, construct, reflect, innovate and engage with natural materials through the 6 interactive artists' installations.

Together with all my three kids, we made a trip down to Playeum, Singapore's First Children's Centre for Creativity and checked it out. This unique centre is a combination of an indoor playground, an enrichment centre and an art museum. All of us love it, and I had difficulty getting them out when Playeum was closing for the day. Here are 7 reasons why your kids should not miss this exhibition which will end on 30 October 2016.

1. Your kids can come up close with the insects to learn about them.

Be it a flying insect or a dead roach, Ch and L shriek for Mommy's protection whenever they see one. That annoys me because I love most invertebrates and I've been trying to educate them so that they will realise that most often, their fears are unfounded. I was surprised to see them so calm and interested with the creepy crawlies at the 'Knock, Knock! Who lives there?' installations!

Children can observe small animals which are found around the Playeum compound in the comfort of their own space. This is because special surveillance cameras have been set up at the natural habitats of these invertebrates and live footages are streamed to the television screens inside the Playeum building. Look out of the windows and you might also spot some live insects comfortably housed in a specially constructed Bug Hotel.

To complement their learning, children can also write to the animals and drop their letter into the red mailboxes below each TV screen. Replies are not promised, but one Playeum staff told me that they do make an effort to reply the sender depending on the content of the letter.

The kids can also look at insect specimens on display, observe and make drawings of them. There are also magnifying glasses for them to view their specimens more clearly. What I was most excited about was the stereo microscope which magnifies and projects the images on the wall.

2. It's a multi-sensory play!

We know how important sensory play is for a young child's development and the good news is, there is no lack of sensory play in this immersive environment. Children get to use their hands, legs, eyes and ears to explore different textures, sounds and lights.

The 'Creature Cave' is one huge cardboard art installation that has a range of textures and lights, as well as sound pads on the floor which produce sounds of frog and insects when pressed. With padded flooring, this installation is suitable and safe for infants and toddlers to be engaged in a multi-sensory play.

Natural materials like leaves, twigs, bamboo are used in many of the artists' installations to provide tactile stimulation and strengthens a closeness with nature.

This Sound Web installation in 'The Dark Space' includes interactive art technology like motion sensors which produce animal sounds when the children move around the room. Try spotting the calls of a crocodile and tiger! Ch and L had fun being silly and "weaving their webs" like spiders using the strips of cloth and velcro.

3. Lots of bonding time between parent and child through child-led play.

With so many activities to do at this exhibition, it is a great opportunity for parents to work together with your child to observe, create, imagine, communicate, and play. Also, I noticed that children below 8yo need some parental guidance else they will just be running wild.

4. It teaches your child that everyone can be creative.

Exhibitions at the Children's Centre for Creativity most closely align with the Reggio Emilia Approach hence the indoor space is set up to encourage collaboration, communication and exploration. Stretch your child's imagination and pretend to be a spider or a worm. They can construct shelters using bamboo poles at the 'Welcome to my World' artist installations while exploring sights and sounds through the eyes and ears of insects.

Make a bee's nest, moth cocoon or musical instrument using natural materials at the 'Welcome to my World' installations or create a "house" for your imaginary creature using clay at 'Make-believe Hideaway'. There are no fixed rules so just let your child's imagination run wild!

5. The exhibition grows with your child's creations.

That's the beauty of the Hideaways - Creating with Nature exhibition. Each installation is not a fixed product of the artist's work. Some of the installations are somewhat work-in-progress and your child's creations can be added on to grow the structure throughout the exhibition's duration. Musical instruments made by the children can be attached to the Tunnel of Sound, a skeletal structure outside the building. Try striking on the materials in the tunnel to hear the beautiful sounds created. L wants to revisit the exhibition to check on his clay creations at the 'Make-believe Hideaway' installation.

6. It's an interdisciplinary learning opportunity.

Art, science and music are some of the disciplines that are clearly evident in this exhibition, but there are many more 'soft' skills that are emphasized while your child is engaged with each installation. Ch had difficulties holding up her structure at the 'Welcome to my World' installation but I was glad she persevered. Just like Ch, L couldn't figure how to draw the insect specimens but he sat there patiently, observing each specimen and tried his best without getting frustrated.

In addition, a series of creative workshops, holiday camps, artists interventions, dance, art jams and other activities will form the Hideaways' programme to allow children and adults to engage and reflect on the subject of the natural world.

7. You are showing support for this not-for-profit organisation.

Underlying all of its programs and operations, Playeum is dedicated towards social impact and committed to serving children from all social backgrounds. Every dollar spent on Playeum activities in the financial year of 2014 yielded a S$15.3 social return according to an independent study by Shujog, a non-profit organisation advocating for impact investment.

The entry charges collected ensures the sustainability of the centre's operations. Playeum does not receive any core funding and is reliant on a funding mix from admissions, grants, sponsorships and donations. This collective income enables the organisation to continue to engage artists, involve quality facilitators, and provide innovative programs to all families and children.

This giveaway is for ONE DAY PASS to the Children's Centre for Creativity. One Day Pass allows entry for one child and one accompanying adult.
Playtime is unlimited for the day but will be kept to two hours during busy periods.

Tickets are non-transferable, non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
The winner will be contacted using the particulars provided when entering the draw, and has 48 hours to respond, failing which a new winner will be drawn.
